Accomodation

All you need to know about housing.

GTL:

Your school will be arranging your accomodation. The most likely housing arrangements are:

  • Apartment. Consider commuting times and facilities resources! Things like trash collection and water heaters are different in the Middle East, so ask questions early on. Make sure you have a way to reach your landlord and an emergency contact to help with housing issues. You'll most likely be on your own for food: decide whether to eat out or cook and plan accordingly. A food stipend may be provided.
  • Dorms. You'll be living with the students! Again, make note of your facilities and ask questions about things you aren't sure of. Check about what is provided (sheets, toiletries, etc.) and pack the rest. Typically, you may also be eating in the dining hall.

Summer Internships:

For summer, you may have to find your own housing, or it may be arranged by your host.

If it is arranged by your host:

  • Be mindful of what will be provided! Ask questions to make sure that you bring things such as sheets, towels, etc. if needed.
  • Consider commuting methods and times.
  • Research the area. Be sure to know where the nearest grocery stores, police stations, medical clinics, and such are.
  • Figure out meals and where and how you will be eating.

If you're on your own to find housing:

  • The most convenient way to find housing is through a lodging website such as Airbnb. You'll want to communicate all of the above questions with your host and book well in advance after doing your research about different areas in Jordan. Some convenients areas are: 1st circle, 4th circle, 5th circle, Jabal Weibdeh, and Um Uthania, but you'll want to specifically find a place close to your work and your interests.
  • Also consider looking into extended stay hotels.

Questions to Ask in Advance

Making sure that you have a good sense of what your housing situation will be and knowing what to do in case of an emergency will make your stay in Jordan that much more enjoyable. Here are some questions to ask to help you prepare:

-What are the move-in and out instructions?

-Will there be towels/bedding/kitchen utensils provided?

-Will there be an AC/fan in the bedroom? How do you turn on heating? Hot water?

-What are the shared spaces of the apartment/dorm like?

-Is there an elevator in the building?

-What to do if you or a roommate loses your keys?

-Who to call in case of an emergency in the apartment (fire, leak, break-in)?

-Who to call in case something needs to be fixed in the apartment (electricity, shower, etc.)?

-Who to call in case there is a bug infestation in the apartment?
